[s-cars] How much boost?

Hi Bob,

A question about these boost numbers I'm seeing. Although not 100% confident
in the actual numbers yet, what are the limiting factors that keep the boost
in the expected range of 22-23 PSI? Now recall I have done the monster air
intake modification. I have replaced the stock 3" hose which has two 90
degree bends plus a contriction in the middle with a 4" ram air system plus
removal of the MAF grills. Wastegate is in stock position.

Question is, would this not allow the turbo to "blow harder" for want of a
better expression.

I have reproduced the higher boost nimbers hitting 25 and 26 PSI on two
separate runs, watched by my co-pilot wife. It only reached these numbers
for a very short period when I hit about 180kmph (110mph) then backed off.
This is not something I'm going to be doing very often.

I'm just wondering if the cold air intake mod could be the difference?

The digital pressure gauge I'm using is a high precision instrument -
retails for around us$200. Details can be found at:

ct_2.cfm?&cc_nvl=((catalogCode,smc),(lineCode,INS),(productCode,5030),(prodt
reeID,13315),(nodeCode,5030))

Cut and paste full link, including parentheses, in to browser for it to
work.

Cheers,

Tony

Thanks Bob. I do question the digital gauge calibration, so I'll work on
that and test again.

Thanks

  Tony,

That sounds pretty high to me. For MRC stage 2 you should be seeing 22-23
psig maximum boost levels. You might possibly see a spike up to 24 or even
25 after reaching 23 psig and then suddenly snapping the throttle shut but
that, if it happens at all, should be purely transitory. 27 psig is too
high for consistent operation. Your stage 2 software is designed for the
22-23 psig level. Consistently higher boost levels will likely produce lean
mixtures which, with prolonged exposure, could result in excessively high
exhaust temperatures leading to things like burnt valves, etc.

Do you have your wastegate perch screwed down? If so, it might be a good
idea to back it off some. Also one can ask just how sure are you of the
accuracy of that digital gauge? A mechanical gauge might be a better idea.

And you are right. 100 mph gets there pretty quickly. So does 130. :-)

    Hi all,

Did the MRC stage 2 to my car at the weeked and also fitted a digital
boost gauge. Just wondering with everything just about stock, apart from
Monster Air Intake mod, what should I be expecting for top end boost? On a
test at the weekend the gauge imaxed at 27 psi but do I believe that?

...and man, does it get to 160km/hr (100mph) very quickly :)
