[s-cars] Using an old Bentley CD on Win XP

You can use an old Bentley CD with Win XP. It's a little more hassle, but
it works just fine. I'm using Netscape 7.2, but I don't see why it wouldn't
work with IE. Here's how to get started:

1. Install the Bentley software.
2. Execute it. The main screen comes up with an error.
3. Use My Computer/Windows Explorer to find 'Bentley Publishers\AUC4\index'
on your hard disk.
4. Click on index.html to bring up the main mechanical index, and wd.html to
bring up the main wiring index.
    Bookmark these two pages.

When using the program, use the bookmarks to go the the main page that you
need. Everything works normally from then on.
(i.e. Execute the Bentley program, go to one of the main pages using a
bookmark, then proceed normally).

I copied the CD to my hard disk first and installed from there so I wouldn't
have to mess with the CD all the time.

Bentley will exchange your old CD for a new version that runs correctly on
Win XP, but the new version uses 'product activation' with all of its
associated nasty problems. I have a policy of saying 'no' to software that
uses activation, which is why I'm doing it the hard way. And if I ever need
to have the Bentley out in the garage on the laptop I'll be able to do it.
