See now... that's the smile of a guy with a good FMIC, not the smile of
an addict who has become hopelessly entrenched in the pursuit of power
at any cost.

Here's my DIY that was done for under $300, with a little (actually a
lot of) help from my friend.

We started on a Monday night and worked for an hour or so with a test
fitting and started working on Wednesday night at around 9 p.m for the
real grunt work. We were done at 5 a.m., Thursday morning, two days
before //S Fest '05. We used a 4 or 5 pieces of precut mandrel bent
aluminized steel piping (cut and welded to make bends that would work)
and no name, but well built, bar and plate IC. It's not pretty like the
other FMIC kits out there, but it works. I personally would not run a
FMIC with every bend being a silicone hose, or one with more than 4
couplers. We have enough sources of boost leaks, that adding anymore is
asking for trouble.

DIY'ing isn't tough if you know someone who can weld, you just have to
get under the car and visualize what goes where, and cut. Then mark the
pipes so it is in the orientation you want them to be welded, and have
the ends welded together.

I'm not trying to sell you on the idea... just stating that inexpensive
options do exist. Unfortunately, the intercooler won't install itself,
and some fab work is required.

1) You do have to cut your bumper
2) You do have to make plumbing runs from the turbo to the IC, and from
the IC to the stock intake hose

Number 2 could be done with various silicon connectors (no welding) if
that was required. The intercooler is made by Treadstone (
http://www.treadstoneintercoolers.com/) and the model is a "BM8." It is
a quality bar and plate IC (no tube and fin junk), and they sell it for
$249... but it can often be found on ebay for $219.

It will fit within the confines of the stock front bumper cover.

OK, Dave - as long as no metal fabrication is required, I'm interested.
I'm a competent DIYer (I'd like to imagine so, anyway), but I have my
limits. So, what's the scoop?

Eric
