So to end this saga with a question, have I damaged either of the clutch
cylinders?

Doubtful.

Is it normal for no fluid to flow until the clutch pedal is depressed when
bleeding the clutch line?

When you have a clog like you had, that is to be expected. I've seen this
on clutch slave cylinders, as well as calipers.

Any comments or insight is welcome.

Just bleed the system more frequently, and this won't happen. Based on the
amount of crud, you may have a failure in the future... either a tight
caliper or a failed slave... but don't hold your breath. It will likely be fine.

I like to use ATE fluid. I buy it in clear and blue. That way I can
alternate colors, and easily determine when I've done a complete bleed.
HTH,
Dave
