[s-cars] HELP - Stopped running

So riddle me this: My 1995.5 S6 Avant simply stopped running last night.
VAG-COM reports "Controller not reponding". Fuses in fusebox by knee bar in
door opening all OK, as are the fuses in the relay box under the hood. Is
there a fuse in the ECU? Elsewhere?

Driving along a city street, coming up to a stop sign, going perhaps 15 mph
and slowing, the engine simply stopped running. No loud noises, no drama,
the tach just went to 0, and we turned into a soap box derby car. Engine
turns over fine (doesn't seem like a tbelt), all electrics seem to be
running fine (doesn't seem like a bad ground strap), seems like a dead ECU,
although that's a spendy part that I'd prefer to not have to replace,
dontchaknow.

Ideas? Suggestions? Hunches?
