[s-cars] 6 Speed Installed

Bjorn,

Since it was my mechanic who installed it, my "real" knowledge surrounding
how the transmission fit is limited, but I can tell you that he didn't seem
to have a problem with it. If you are serious about it, you can always
contact him (his website:
www.roadandtrackmotorsport.com<http://www.roadandtrackmotorsport.com>)
via phone and simply ask about it, his name is Sunny and he's a really nice
guy, a real Audi nut. As I think I said before, when I asked him about it
after the install he said the only thing he needed to change was a mounting
dowel, and he said he was able to use his lathe to trim the existing dowel
down to the right size for the new tranny. I also think he was able to use
all the same bolts and fittings as well. From what I can gather, the EDU
transmission bell housing is VERY similar to the S6 (CBD?) housing, perhaps
the same except for the mounting dowel difference. With that similarity
comes complete compatibility with the old clutch and flywheel. They
certainly haven't been changed and the car drives great.

For you, my main concern would be the proconten bracket. I didn't have to
worry about it because the S6 has active seatbelt tensioners in the pillars,
but S4s use the proconten method of tightening the front seatbelts in a head
on collision. I have heard that a good mechanic can simply use your existing
proconten bracket and use a heavy duty belt clamp to secure it, but it's
certainly going to take some experimentation. The reason I would never go
without it is not necessarily because of my safety, but rather the safety of
whoever I may sell the car to because if they get hurt or die in an accident
because of the proconten not working, I am liable. So it's up to you to make
a call on that one.

If you're serious about it, I would read this (
http://www.elektro.com/~audi/01E/DSY/) just to hear how Elijah installed a
DSY (the euro version) transmission in his S4 even though I think his was
more challenging than an EDU would be (I know you don't need to do any
saw-zawling to the EDU bell housing for my car). If you haven't already, I
would also study up on the next directory down in that web page (
http://www.elektro.com/~audi/01E/) so you're familiar with the codes and
differences when you get into buying one. Finally, if you find a tranny that
you like, I would recommend requesting the VIN off of the car it came out of
and getting a VIN off of ebay from a 2000 S4 6-speed and calling a dealer to
ask if the two parts match up. What this does is ensures that if a dealer
were to order a transmission new, that it would work in both cars, or in
other words be completely compatible. I got a scare halfway though the
buying process when I learned that the car my EDU came out of was a 2001.5.
I had heard that there were things that were changed on the car, and no one
had really investigated what they were from a transmission standpoint, so I
called a dealer about it and they said they would actually order the same
tranny part number for both a 2000 and a 2001.5 S4. It worked for me, but my
point is you need to be careful to make sure it works for you.

Good luck.
