No. Do not replace transmission! I'll bet you have a linkage problem.
Possibly damaged syncros -- yes (possible). The giveaway is the shifter not
returning to the proper neutral position. Bushing(s) could definitely be a
problem. Does the shifter feel sloppy all around? Do you find that the
right-side gears have inexorably moved to the left as well? Not sure about
your car -- but the big culprit on the V8 and the 200q20v was the ball at
the end of the selector by the trans was loose. Solution was to remove and
pound the dickens out of it where it joins the "lever" IIRC. Result: Nice,
tight shifts (well, as tight as these trannies allow).
Of course, you can still save up for a 6-speed.
Best,
Ingo

I now have some bad transmission problems, I missed a WOT shift from 1st to
2nd.
Things are not good,1st and 2nd are very hard to shift into and the shifter
does not go into neutral right. The shifter will hang over to the left in
the first to second gate, not over in third.
Is there any BTDT on this problem, any reports on failed transmissions out
here would be very helpful at this point. Seems the tranny will be coming
out, and getting opened. This is a 92 5 speed, non wide etc.
I have not had any noise in first to indicate galling of the first gear, as
I have never really hammered it in first since I heard of this weakness. Are
there any parts out here for repairing this (whatever it turns out to be),
possibly from some of the swapped out to 6 speed units ?
What is the current 6 speed of choice ? and what dollar amount are we
looking at.
Thanks o' great S-List...
