Craig,
Just remember, you are the one in charge, and unless she is buying it and
insuring it with her own money the 4000 would be 100% better than no car at
all given those two choices.

To all who replied to me, thanks - though the S-car content has deviated, I
have gotten a ton of good advice from car enthusiasts I know (thru the list
anyway) and trust.
To those who suggested a 4000Q would be great - I could not agree more. It
is bombproof, safe, and I can fix it blindfolded. Unfortunately, I have
girls, and they all think they are ugly. Perhaps because they were hauled
around in one for 12 years. That is just not "cool" anymore. Sniff.
To all of those who mentioned blind spots in the New Beetle: thanks, I have
not driven one, and will definitely pay heed to that aspect. I would prefer
my daughter get a Golf - they are about the same price used - but.....girl
again....Beetles are "cuter". As for maintenance, I generally do my own. I
have wholesale parts sources, a good tool set, and can get special tools in
a pinch - though New Beetle tools might not be available. A risk I likely
will have to take.
As far as driving skills go; defensive driving AS WELL as offensive driving
are BOTH skills worth having. Defensive for 98.5% of the time; offensive
merely to have a clue as to how a vehicle reacts when turned too fast,
braked to fast, braked too fast in a turn, suddenly on a slick surface, etc.
You do not want to feel those results for the first time in a real life
situation. I told my daughter the other day: "See that car? (the one just
going by). That was basically a missle, and it just missed us by three to
four feet. There goes another one. And another. You are narrowly avoiding
hundreds of missles everytime you drive. Of all those missles, you just
trusted every one of those drivers to steer their missle properly - and do
you trust EVERYBODY?" This seemed to sink in, especially when I clipped a
few local fatality accidents that were center line crossers.
It will be interesting for sure - but just a part of having children in the
first place.
I hope I can talk her into a Golf.
Konis, H&R's, RSB, FSB, GTI goodies........ooooh the fun. We do that, we
will be autocrossing against each other, her in the Golf - me in my 1981
Scirocco S.
Yup, I still have the same car I learned to drive in.
