A dremel cut off wheel does it.  IIRC without looking, the useless
portion of the latch handle that is parallel to the ground and
projects beyond the sheetmetal when you pull the latch  can be rather
easily (but carefully) cut off without taking the latch off of the
car.
I think 5 or 10mm have to be cut from each side too.
I think I used permanent black marker to just cover the area that was cut.
None of this will make you any faster.
