Ian,
I would check the wires in the door jam in the driver's door.
The wires are "protected" by a rubber "sleeve" and are prone to
cracking/breaking. It's possible you have a wire that has cracked and
is either shorting out to the body or contacting another wire and
supplying power to the motor.
