Check out 26 Oct. NYTimes special car section E, page 8, for "Never Mind the
Price of Gas, They Want Power".

Not a deep-drill by any means, more of a general story on HP gains across
the industry.  They do mention small displacement tuners/turbos/cold air
intake and dynamometers.  Cited a WRX owner who put $40k into his car, only
to part out later (while still making payments) because it never ran right -
he called his habit the 'dark side' (vs. our slippery slope).
