[s-cars] Suspension trouble

Igor,
I just came out of the exact same problem. Both control arms replaced
because of punched dust cap I discovered too late. IIRC, it took not more
than 6 month to start to develop some play in the ball joints. The mix of
gravel and salt we have during winter and spring have certainly not helped.
BTW, if you want to go OEM for the replacement, Gabriel Caldwell has too urS
under the knife and OEM dust caps from the 5000 will fit on the urS ball
joints, being just a bit tight on the upper side. My control arms were from
a 93 urS IIRW (with 180kmiles on my S6, I'm not expecting another 7 years),
and I was surprised how tight they were.
Vincent
P.S.: I also hate suspension job. It took another 9 month before I actually
replace the ball joints once I discovered they were shot!

Hap,
the white Low Flying Object has developed a clunk in the right front
corner. It only happens when a) I turn to the left and b) the suspension
is unloaded. In other words, only when doing a sharp left turn over a
dip on the right or over the "lying polizei" under the right front wheel.
The lower control arms and their bushings are fairly new. Ron Whiton and
the yours truly have replaced them in our respective cars side by side
in my garage a couple of years ago. All 4 antisway bar bushings were
replaced at the same time. The shocks were replaced last autumn
courtesy of the Bilstein lifetime warranty. Everything was torqued to spec.
However both ball joint dust caps are torn... mind you on the new lower
control arms. The OEM ones had served proudly for 7 years. The
aftermarket replacements (Löbro) lasted for only 2 years. However the
ball joints seem to be in a good shape. I couldn't get them to move with
a Big A$$ Pry Bar with the strut spring unloaded.
Puzzled... or lazy... or both. I hate suspension work.
