Thanks for the replies on this subject so far. The reason I asked was, I was at the shop where my turbo, headers and exhaust are getting installed (I'll have pics eventually -- the stainless steel exhaust manifold is something to behold) and one of the other customers there who drives a tuned 20VT equipped 90 remarked that he got 11 mpg regardless of his driving, and that he burned a lot of oil (~1 qt/1.5 months). My first thought was "well that's a poorly tuned/operating vehicle!" but then I realized that I didn't know what to expect mileage-wise from a well-running 20VT with a big turbo. 
   
  For comparison, my daily driver is a 2001 A4 1.8T quattro with manual transmission. I usually get 25-28 mpg highway depending on my speed. There gets to be a notable drop in mpg once the speeds get above 80 mph. My trip comp usually shows an average of 25 mpg by the end of a tank, showing combined city + highway result.
