Hi Igore,
Whay happened is that I lost one remote, so only have one left, and ws
looking for and alternate given there are a few on Ebay. As for range, the
lone RF unit is about 4-5ft but the battery hasn't been replaced so that may
help.
I will try a remote from my wife's 2001 Golf and check the rance first.
Thanks.

Tony,
it was I who did that research since at the time I had a '97 S6 and a
'98 A4 side by side in the stable.
The good news is the '98 -> forward switchblade will work in the RF
controlled S6.
The bad news is the range will become laughable.
Conversely, the S6 remote had effectively doubled the range when paired
with the A4, but who would want to trade the switchblade remote for a
dongle.
In a word: regretfully I scrapped the idea.
