Tom,
thank you for the reply. I know exactly what you're talking about. Your 
advice might help Ivan. For the '97 <only> m.y. Audi finally redesigned 
this weak weld point and in my car there is a thick piece of angle iron 
welded at the factory. We did compare those points on my car and some 
earlier cars several years back at one of the Audi clubs. If the 
steering twisted side to side on a stationary car the inner fender to 
rack weld would "breathe" in earlier cars yet it would be stationary in 
mine. I have just double checked it again. It is still rock solid.
