[s-cars] Ipod integration and speaker replacement

Back is 6x9, front depends on how adventurous you want to be. You can get
adapters that will bolt right in and accommodate a 4 inch speaker...the
stock is about 5 inches. You can also do some modification to the door
panel and fit 5.25's but it does take some massaging. Right now I have
decided to simply leave the stock Bose stuff in and hook the pre-amp outputs
up to the inputs of the Bose amps. You have to hook all 4 up or you get
unbelievable alternator whine. The only anomaly is a loud amplifier pop
when you switch on the unit or change input sources, i.e. tuner, cd, or
ipod. I believe the pop is due to the fact that the stock deck used
something on the order of 1V pre-amp outs and the ALpine uses 2V, and
therefore over-drives the speaker. There meay also have been some dampening
circuitry in the original head unit that is usually incorporated into
aftermarket amps. Since I don't plan on having this for too terribly long,
i.e. I will eventually replace all the speakers, this is just a minor
annoyance.

BTW the ipod fits perfectly where the old CD changer controller used to go.
Make sure your ipod is not on shuffle or repeat when you hook it up to the
head unit or the head unit controls won't work...ask me how I know :) BTW,
the Scosche adapter plug you can buy from Best Buy has all of the pins,
other then the pre-amp interface you would need. The Metro harness
connector you can get from Ultimate Electronics or Circuit City is missing a
couple of pins. If you have any questions about the install let me know. I
just did this 2 weekends ago. Best Buy is the same price as Crutchfield, or
at least they were 2 weekends ago. Of course you have to pay tax...it just
depends on how anxious you are or how much you value buying something
locally.

Aaron,

I plan on ripping it all out, which is why I am trying
to find out what speaker sizes I'll need.
