I've read here about people figuring this out and fixing the units.
Without remembering much of the details, it seems that they lubricated
something after they got the CD & cartridge out of the player.
If nothing else works, this web page gives information on how to locate
another CD Changer on eBay. The critical, unobtainable, part is the
adapter box fastened to the underside of the CD changer. The CD changer
itself is a Sony model that is the same as used in other applications
and you can find them pretty cheap on eBay.

Can't say it didn't give you a good life. After like Igor said before
"the 3rd time" and mine kept finding other things to do, I gave it the
ultimate 'fix': 30gb MP3. Bye bye stupid CD's, all of them. Ultimate
library @ fingertips, gave in after oooo-ing others' set ups.
Er, anyway, Gary if any parts of my Sony chassis are of use to you
you're welcome to them. I may set fire to it otherwise and dance around
it - or something. Bys is enjoying my former 10 disc cartridge as a
welcomed spare. Any you die hard gluttons need my - like Charlie said -
critically unobtainable "magic silver box" thingy to allow you to
further clutch to a prolonged OE route, lemme know mine can be had. I
say gluttons cause I couldn't take any more and MP3 library rocks arse.
Happy to help.
