[s-cars] installing a hybrid turbo

Teddy,
The lines:
Oil return... -10 for a T3/T4 hybrid, or -8 for a GT series. You need a flange fitting for each end of the line. If you use a T3/T4, the fitting that goes in the turbo is the same as the one that bolts onto the block. This is it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7958036239&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT
You would need 2 of these for a T3/T4. Then all you do is build the -10 line with female -10 ends to connect the 2 fittings. Depending on where things are located, you'd decide if you want to use any 90 or 45 degree ends.
For a GT turbo, use one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160014483298&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT
You would need one of these for the turbo outlet, and one of the ones above for the block inlet. These happen to have -10 nipples on them, but the GT turbo only needs a -8 return line.
Oil feed:
T3/T4 needs a -4 line. You need 2 1/8 NPT to -4 fittings, like these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/16-AN-Fittings-Adapters-4-to-1-8-NPT-St-New-213d_W0QQitemZ320013074591QQihZ011QQcategoryZ6763QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The oil filter housing must be tapped to take the fitting... and the turbo should already be done. Then you make the -4 line, with female ends... and decide if you need any angles.
Water lines:
These can be a little trickier, because the center housings for the T3/T4 Garretts vary. The easiest thing to do is use a banjo fitting with a push-lock connector. Whatever route you go to connect the hose to the turbo, the engine side of things can be pretty easy. The existing freeze plug nipple is very close to -8. If you use -8 hose, you can push it on to the nipple and clamp it. I have used -8 SS line clamped to the nipple, and it works fine.
The other water line is the one that goes behind the timing belt. The metal hose (when cut off) is very close to -6. Same applies... use a -6 line and it will be a snug fit. Clamp it, and you're good to go.
The only other issue with the hybrid install is the MAF to turbo inlet hose. You will need to change it to something like this:

The turbo you asked about is exactly the turbo by buddy Hap used to run (he'll tell you he was running a 57 trim)... a 54 trim with a stage 3 KKK hot side. Obviously, it can make very good power (418whp). My personal preference is still the 50 trim, and I would suggest a stage 2 turbine wheel (slightly smaller) for a faster spool-up. By and large, most of the folks that run a stage 3 turbine wheel tend to complain about the boost threshold. A 2 hits sooner, and doesn't kill the top end.
HTH,
Dave

dave,
is the water line the only one that runs behind the timing belt?
do you simply cut off a small portion of the existing metal line,
and clamp the hose over it? did you have to form a bead to retain the
hose, or is the hose small enough that it's not necessary?
is there some place i can find a description of making the hoses?
looking at the picture of the hose kit on 034motorsport.com, i count
7 fittings. one of the hoses ends in a piece of rubber hose with no
fitting on the end, so i think that's intended to clamp to the existing
hardline after cutting it off as you described. 7 fittings, figure
about $20-$25 per fitting, plus gaskets, bolts, etc. i'm not sure if
i could do it myself for less than $200. (i do make my own brake
lines, oil lines, etc. for the mustang.)
aside from the hoses, what else is involved in installing the hybrid
turbo? what do you think of this one?
