With my very limited experience, I can already tell you that axial play is
not so much a concern. When I bought the S-bitch with 70Kmiles, I had
something like 1/8" to 1/4" of axial play in the smallish hairdryer. The
S-bitch now have a bit more than 185Kmiles and the turbo just start to have
an noticeable increased lag which have probably more to do with an intake
leak I've been too lame to track down than with a failing turbo. Did I
mention that I have the very bad habit to floor the go pedal when it's -30C
because people are way too slow on icy roads - Man, what's the idea of
buying a spinning FWD when you live in Quebec - and my Audi ethic only tell
me to wait until the turbo is not audible anymore at idle before you floor
it. I mean, if it's not for smashing it whenever you can, what's the idea of
buying the most reliable engine Audi have ever build and keep it stock.

So really, if axial play was a concern, I think my turbo would have gone
forth and back to Even at least a hundred times since I own the S-bitch.

And the far behind reminiscence of Mechanics 101 tells me that radial play
is _really_ a bad thing in a fast spinning whatever.

Now, there will be a bunch of people which are much more knowledgeable than
me, and who takes much better care of their S-love, that will either confirm
what I said, or confirm I'm a desperately unrecyclable fool.

Vincent.

radial play? axial play?

by "axial" i mean along the axis of the shaft that connects the impeller
and turbine. "radial" is perpendicular to this axis, in the plane
of the impeller.

how much play is too much? my stock turbo has play both radially and
axially. it has 138k miles on it with MTM stage 2+, so it's led a
fairly hard life.
