Mike: How many miles on the sparkplugs?  They may have been in too long. 

On the other hand I just changed the plugs in my 2.0L 16V Passat-engined 
1986 Jetta Carat (F6DTC - three electrode copper).  Those plugs have been
 in there at least 9 years <embarrassed sheepish grin>.  The center was 
eroded to a triangle but the car was running fine. New plugs made no 
difference.  But then again its not a turbo car.
