You should see it when you remove the plastic cover form the back. It's
not the same voltage reg as the earlier cars though.

Subject: [s-cars] Alternator is kaput
Hi folks,
The alternator on my '95.5 S6 went tango uniform this past weekend.
I've searched the archives and it appears that the most likely culprit
is worn brushes on the voltage regulator. After doing some research on
replacement alternators/voltage regulators, I'm getting confused.
On the early cars ('92 -'94), it looks like the voltage regulator is
easily accessible-- just remove two screws on the back of the
alternator and it pops out. On my car however, there is a plastic
cover on the back of the alternator, and I don't see a voltage
regulator anywhere. So...
1. Do I have to remove the alternator and disassemble the whole thing
to access the voltage regulator? The bottom mounting bolt on the
alternator is seized, so I don't want to go through the ordeal of
removing it if I don't have to.
2. Is the voltage regulator even replaceable, i.e. do I have buy a
new/rebuilt alternator ($ouch$)?
Thanks in advance,
Eugene
