I did this on my car 95 not too long ago, and I took the whole
alternator out of the car. As I remember the lower bolt was an allen key
(?) a good 3/8 drive allen key and a breaker bar was what I used. Once
it was out of the car, the black cover is easy to remove and the
regulator was easy to replace. I guess you might be able to do it with
the whole thing still mounted.
You don't have to take apart the whole thing, just out of the car, and
remove the plastic cover. It might just be a few screws on the back?

I got my regulator from FAP99.com for $44. There is a different part
number for the earlier cars, but the procedure is pretty much the same.
-Don't forget to remove the Battery connection when you're messing
around on the back of the alternator.

Hope that gets you charged up.
-Mike

Subject: [s-cars] Alternator is kaput

Hi folks,
The alternator on my '95.5 S6 went tango uniform this past weekend.
I've searched the archives and it appears that the most likely culprit
is worn brushes on the voltage regulator. After doing some research on
replacement alternators/voltage regulators, I'm getting confused.

On the early cars ('92 -'94), it looks like the voltage regulator is
easily accessible-- just remove two screws on the back of the
alternator and it pops out. On my car however, there is a plastic
cover on the back of the alternator, and I don't see a voltage
regulator anywhere. So...

1. Do I have to remove the alternator and disassemble the whole thing
to access the voltage regulator? The bottom mounting bolt on the
alternator is seized, so I don't want to go through the ordeal of
removing it if I don't have to.

2. Is the voltage regulator even replaceable, i.e. do I have buy a
new/rebuilt alternator ($ouch$)?

Thanks in advance,
Eugene
