I've used toluene in my S/Ced Miata for years.  It helps a lot with 
detonation problems.

As I recall, toluene is a component of gasoline anyway so you're not 
really putting a "foreign" substance into your car, just changing the 
relative mixture of the fuel.  Someone with actual engineering-leve 
knowledge of such things will be able to provide more details on this 
aspect.

Whether this solves your problem or not, I can't say but it is cheap 
octane booster you can get at the local paint store by the gallon. :-)
