[s-cars] Confirmed: Braided brake lines don't age well

I can't tell about the rubber hose as it was on the car when I bought it so
I don't know how it was treated. Probably the way most mechs treat brake
hoses: badly.

But I installed the braided steel hose myself and the rear caliper where the
hose blew off was left untouched during the 3 years. Now, it can be that
100Kmiles of bumps and potholes as we have in Quebec is close to the
lifespan of these hoses.

What really scared me was that the hose blew off with no warning signs like
leaks or torn braiding. The line was dirty but intact and just blew off
approx. 1 inch from the caliper end. No need to say I changed all four in
the following days.

in that case, i'd wonder if there was an issue with your car that caused
it to pop a braided steel hose and a rubber hose.

a lot of mechanics allow the caliper to dangle from the hose after removing
the caliper.  rubber hoses will put up with that kind of abuse better
than braided steel hoses, but it's still a very bad idea.  it puts a lot
of stress on the hose near the fitting, and in the case of braided steel
hose, it causes the teflon liner to cold-flow, weakening the liner.  it
can also damage the braided steel.

years ago, i took my mustang to a shop to have a torsen differential
installed.  i saw the rear calipers dangling from the braided steel
hoses.  after complaining to the shop, i changed the hoses immediately
afterwards.
