Figured I'd put word out to stem the flow into my inbox. Car's likely
spoken for, it was a bank sale for year-end hence the bargain. If it
falls through I'll let you all know.
Oddly enough it's the guy who'd contacted me last week on an '02 //S8 my
MB service writer's dad was trading in. We found out that car sold
yest. (btw the MB stealer put $14k on the car with 85k - gasp), then the
C5 came up about a minute later... turned out he was really looking
for one of *those* to begin with. Gotta love it.
The kicker - guy lives in Iceland - go figure. Anyone want to buy his
C4 S4 4.2 Avant 6spd??? Green, Boleros, f'n neat car. Too bad we can't
import them.
Got to whoop the C5 a bit last night, I'd only experienced my bro's
2.8L, then a 3.0L, and Jimmy's Smallroad before. Prior to buying my
//S8 I was contemplating these as well. I had heard a few 'bad things'
from people that owned them about not liking the way the tip shifted,
etc., and ultimately decided IMO the D2 is just "more car" than a C5
will ever be. Plus the D2's $ had fallen considerably harder made it an
easy decision.
Well, I learned 2 things last night.
First: the C5 is a hoot and a half to drive. I think the tip *may*
have even shifted 'better' than mine - go figure. Car makes slightly
more guttural sound which is cool.
Second: after sitting there staring at it for an hour after my drive,
it hit me - the D2 is waywayWAY more car than the C5 will ever be. Hard
to quantify, just things like way nicer interior, double paned glass,
etc. make for a bunch of intangibles in the D2. And there's nothing
like the feel / sound of the all-aluminum car - sound being the way it
reverberates over the road. I know, goofy, hard to quantify, but the D2
just feels, looks, smells, well, exotic. Dumb, I know, but an
irrefutable feeling about them.
I do like the C5 cluster waywayway better - bastid's get a voltmeter an
oil temp gauge - grrrrr. And the door pockets are more modern, pair of
fold out compartments in each are nifty, and the seat memory buttons
don't look like they're out of an '86 80S as they do still in the D2.
Getting back into mine this a.m., mine does feel maybe a TICK faster,
mostly past 4k on the tach. And wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiider, yikes. That
was the first sensation last night... the C5 felt like an econobox
sizewise after acclimating to my car for 90 days now. The C5 is
definitely more nimble and tossable, and the suspension maybe a tad
stiffer. Don't like the seating position as much, as with the C4 it's
just too high. The D2 sits so nice and flat / low inside. But the C5
is likely a hair better driver's car. And who doesn't like 7 acres of
alcantara headliner???
Anywho... my typical useless useless.

stuff K.
