[s-cars] I think my steering is shot... Help!

Don't bother replacing the damper.

Check your rear control arms, slop there will show up just 
as you described. I know because it did on both of our S4's.

They are an easy swap out 

I'd recommend you get an appointment at Otto Kihm for an alignment 
the same day you plan on doing the swap, and replace both control
arms while you are at it.
