If you hear the clunking (or creaking) sound primarily when the car is
stopped, I would suggest checking the rack mounting on the driver's side.
The pre 95.5 S cars had an occasional problem with cracking of the inner
wheel well where the rack mounts. Then the metal flexes when the rack
stresses the attachment point and gives the sound. BTDT, which required a
grafting of a new, uncracked, section of the inner fender. See if you see
the cracks. Look from both the engine compartment as well as from the wheel
well.

The rack, eh? Not the front inner control arm bushings?
Loose rack? Maybe it wasn't tightened properly? Did you have it out?
