I was running only the cheapies, BKR7E, V-Power plugs, as they were readily
available from thepartsbin.com while I was ordering a set of Bosch plugs,
among other things, for the avant. Referencing your link, I see there are
two NGK premiums that are now available; the Laser Platinum, PFR7B's and the
Iridium IX, BKR7EIX's. A quick check of thepartsbin.com shows that they now
have the Laser's (at $14.95 each), but not the Iridiums. Where do you
source them and at what prices? I did have a Bosch self-destruct in the
middle of a trip many years ago; smoke and oil blowing out all over the
place. Had to have the car flatbedded back to New Orleans and determined
that only the coil and plug needed replacement. No problems with them
since, but I remember having attributed the failure to the plug potentially
having loosened, as I had not retorqued them for quite a while, at that
point.

Why stray from the tried and true Bosch? Where to begin... I ran those
plugs in my engine which is GT30R equipped... header, etc. I had repeated
plug failures. Some began losing the center electrode, becoming loose, and
developing a misfire. One even dropped the entire center electrode AND the
ceramic insulator into the combustion chamber. Hap had a similar experience
on his brand new 2.5, and it destroyed the whole engine, head and all.
Pederson lost a few as well. And there have been others.
I wouldn't touch the Bosch plug with a 10 foot pole. I've been running the
NGK Iridium plugs with no problems whatsoever. They also offer 2 other
varieties of plugs that are cheaper, but I haven't tried them yet.
NGK for me, and nothing else. http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/

Mike:
Short answer - why stray from the manufacturer recommended plug that is
tried and true?
This plug will last upwards of 50,000 km which is 2-3 years for the average
driver.
Assuming the other plug lasts the same time, at a $10 premium over generic
plugs, we are talking about $16-25 more per year.
Why bother?
Unless of course someone can prove that a different plug is better.
Cheers,
Sean Douglas
