[s-cars] Synthetic Oils

Audi started their recommendation for specification 503.01(interim) &
505.00/505.01 or Euro A3/B3/B4 as of the 2000-on model year. These have
various recommendations for Grades and such but the one standout is the
minimum HTHS (High Temp High Shear) is 3.5 which is just what Mobil 1 0W-40
meets but the 10W-30 and 5W-30 do not. Only Mobil 1 15W-50 exceeds this and
that is mostly due to the heavier viscosity not a superior oil. Now, Redline
oils (although pricier) are all in excess of HTHS 4 even though many are
thinner oils than 15W-50 and even the 0W-40 Mobil 1. Of course Mobil 1 is
known as a Group III synthetic and Redline is tops at Group V. Audi does not
(that I know) have a current/new recommendation for the older cars. What I
am thinking is that my AAN motor stock, or in my case, with RS2 mods is just
as highly stressed as any of the newer Audi engines, or more stressed than
some of the normally aspirated models. I want the piece of mind of superior
protection in my Audi. I don't want a 100~150K motor. I want a 200K+ motor
that is putting our more HP than when it left the factory. If any of you
have the Spring 2005 issue of Quattro Quarterly there is a very good article
on oils. If not, just do a Google search on synthetic oils and HTHS in your
search and you will find some very good articles, throw 'Audi' in your
search parameters also to narrow it down. I used Mobil 1 10W-30 in my S6 for
a few years before I learned Porsche was using Mobil 1 0W-40. Now with what
I know I have switched to Redline 10W-40 but I would also use their 10W-30.
I have also bad mouthed Amsoil for years but on further research, most of
their oils exceed Mobil 1 in almost all categories, not as good as Redline,
but better than Mobil 1. I actually feel bad about those years I used Mobil
1 10W-30. MGH

Is this for new cars or *any* Audis?

Should I stop running 10W-30 in my 2.8l V6 motors?
