Eric:  My guess is your release cable is not attached to the rad support as it should be (changing the pull angle and therefore pull distance).  STRONGLY suggest that you tie-wrap cable to rad support the next time you open the hood.  Also, for good measure, lube the latching mechanism in the rad support, it could be binding.
