I agree that the RS2 is hard to beat. However, if you use a 50 trim Garrett with a stage 1 (small) turbine wheel, boost threshold is nearly as quick as the RS2. I have dyno graphs of both, and while you do give up a little in response time, you gain a lot on the top end, and the area under the curve is improved.
The 3071 turbo that I used hit sooner than an RS2 by a significant margin. However, that turbo doesn't offer a cost or reliability advantage.
I have owned and driven all... and it comes down to your personal taste. The complete RS2 setup (less the exhaust cam) is bulletproof and fun. Swap the turbo for the above mentioned hybrid, and you get a little (very little) slower response, with a stronger pull to redline. Put in a 3071, and you get faster response and more power... but at the cost of longevity and $.

Mike, IMO, the best turbo setup would be something close to the RS2 in terms
of
how it responds and the power delivery. I've been quite impressed with RS2
setups,
I think it makes for a decent daily driver.
If you start going to a really big turbo, I don't think it will be as much
fun in day-to-day
use, but that's just me. I think the crisp throttle response of my daily
driver is getting to me.
I really like how my turbo car has very little lag and strong response, I
wouldn't go to a big
turbo primarily because you give up that response time.
Taka
