May be put some of that Castrol grease on the disks, that'll stop the
squeak. ;)

Subject: [s-cars] 1995 S6 front brakes (UK spec)

Hello chaps (and happy new year).

I had to do the brakes this week due to a shudder that was getting
steadily worse. The car has the 314mm ventilated discs and the twin
piston callipers used by UK-spec S6s. Both front disks had a large
(25ms strip) heavily corroded section on the inner side near the outer
edge. Some of this corrosion had flaked off leaving a very rough
surface which had chewed material off the pads.

Replacing the disks wasn't that straightforward. I tried to get the
callipers off without dismantling them, which meant access to the 18mm
bolts holding the callipers to the strut was very limited. On one side
the 18mm bolts holding the bracket to the strut were EXTREMELY tight -
all the way. With hindsight, I should have separated the two halves of
the calliper from each other and from the bracket by undoing the two
triple-square bolts. Then everything is easier to get at, but you have
the tricky job of hooking the rubber accordion seals for the three pins
over the lips - you need to practise on one until you get the knack.

I used Castrol LM grease on the pins. Is that a no-no as far as the
rubber seals are concerned. I did it years ago on an old Audi 100, and
the rubber boots seemed to survive. Any BTDTs?

I now have very nice firm progressive braking, with no judder. BUT, I
have a near constant squeak/scraping noise from the left brake. Only at
speeds above about 30mph, and the squeak doesn't change pitch with road
speed. It goes away when braking.

I've never had squeaky brakes before on an Audi. Any thoughts?
