With a light spring, running high boost, the WG will open slightly as boost builds. A stiffer spring will usually result in slightly quicker boost response. Peak boost isn't usually changed much... but the system may not respond as quickly to overboost... meaning that you may see undesirable spikes as boost builds, and before the system can respond to bring it back down. Aftermarket boost controllers try to combat this by working only with boost... applying it to the top of the WG diaphragm to strengthen the spring, and then bleeding it off (with a "high performance" frequency valve) to control the peak boost.
This is what I've experienced, working with several different springs... and a couple of different boost controllers.

Does changing the spring to a stiffer one (or tightening it down) change
the boost amount or does it just change how fast pressure is built?
