Kent: When I built the first 1.8t conversion wiring harness, I used a
ratcheting crimper for the butt connectors that I did use. (I also
soldered - for the "T"'s on the two common ground wires - a different
technique (6 fewer wires) than Dennis used)
I double-crimped (side by side) and am/was quite confident that the
crimps are physically strong.
A curious thing was the crimping deforms the plastic shell on the crimp,
as always. However, the heat from the engine totally relaxed these
deformations in a few days so the shells look untouched. I took
advantage of that and filled the ends (2 per crimp) with red (high heat)
silicon caulking to seal (I hope) the crimp from moisture. Then I added
the shiny "chrome" wire loom cover to protect it all (as much as
possible).
