Doug,
I too do this for a living, albeit though not in the same capacity,
nor as focused as Dave has outlined. I can say though that:
- $50- 100/hour seems completely reasonable. depending on industry
and skills required, more is not uncommon at all. also, where you are
geographically located will also determine/guide this.
- yes, contracts are definitly used and do not agree to this work
without one. it is basically your butt on the line otherwise.
- documentation can vary. if you are alluding to the project brief,
desired goals, ect- this is something for the client to provided.....
or pay you to help them write. both situations are very common. if
you are asking about findings, milestone documents, updates- this is
your responsibility (assuming the agreement says otherwise) and
really what you are there for. leaving tangible, process artifacts
for their group to reference and implement.
