On the subject of carbon on the valves... About every year my old GTI used 
to get a slight after-run , maybe one second tops  when turning off the 
ignition, aka dieseling. I would run the fuel very low and then dump in a 
can of Lubrimoly Fuel injector cleaner and a can of Ventil-Sauber (valve 
clean), then go drive the car for about a 1/2 hour. Cured the problem every 
time.  When I first got the GTI I also tried the Seamfoam treatment, makes 
the car a fog machine. :-) Seafoam info:
