[s-cars] So how hard is it to retrofit the 3 spoke sport steering wheel?

I read the writeup on s-cars.org.  Seems fairly straightforward with the exception of the spring business.

What's the deal with that?  Is it really necessary to cut off the old spring and JB Weld it on?  Isn't there a more elegant solution?

Anyone have another write up with pics so I can better visualize this?  

I've done plenty of steering wheel swaps, wiring past airbags, etc, so I'm not worried about that at all, I just don't like irreversibly hacking something up and not putting it back together right!
