[s-cars] S6 Handbrake Cable Replacing

When doing this job should i wind the caliper piston back in before replacing these??? or is it ok just to plug and play with the new cables and adjust on the yolk?? My understanding of the caliper is that hand brake mechanism inside the caliper is set in relation to how the pads wear??? the pads are only 2k miles old.
