Tom,
I am copying this to the S-Car list where you will find more specific
advice on these beauties.
I bought my S6 Avant in Denver and drove it home to Minnesota in
January with 8 year old summer tires and a defunct thermostat. I was
lucky that the roads were dry.
I must say though, that if you are going to be the owner of and S-car,
you should not be worried over a few paltry dollars invested in
getting back to your home state. If this is a concern, S-cars are not
for you. The standard advice for them is, "Bury your wallet in the
back yard and forget where the hole is." It is a slippery slope out
there, and I am not talking about the Front Range.
