I agree completely. A converted system will never perform at the same level as it did with the refrigerant it was designed for. R12 is currently only about $9 per pound more than R134. Is it really worth converting to save $18?

Awhile back when I had my '85 GTI, I converted to R134. At the time VW had a conversion kit that consisted of new receiver/driver, some seals, and the appropriate fittings. Back then to fix the R12 or convert to R134 was the same price (about $ 260, IIRC) so I converted. It never did get as cold or cool down as quick as with the R12. I would fix the leak and try to stay R12 if you can.
