JR:
Just to add to my earlier response about the low freon.
I have a 92S4. Back in 1997 my S4 started to have the recirc button
kept going off. My trusty Audi mechanic right away told me to add
Freon and that solve the problem right away. Then in 2004 it started
with the same symptom again but I was too lazy to add Freon since I
do not use AC that often. Well this summer (2006) the weather got
really hot here in So Cal that when I turn on my AC the compressor
kept recycling every 15-25 secs (Recirc button does not even engange).
I took it for a freon recharge and now the AC is cool and everything
is working like normal (including the recirc button).
Just be cautious when you take your car to the AC guy since on my
92S4, there is only one port for the Freon (most car has two port,
high side and low side).
The port is located between the firewall and the front windshield
(passenger side). You have to unscrew the pressure sensor and there
will be the port with schrader type valve. Since you only have only
have one port, the proper way to accurately recharge the AC is for
the AC technician to suck (vacumm) all the Freon from the system and
add about 1100±100gr of freon. Plus you need to put a jumper on the
pressure sensor while charging.
Some AC technician will simply add freon from that single port but it
is going to be difficult to know it is too much or too little having
only one port.
