That is correct.  The clip goes around the outside of the fitting, in
line with the pipe.  

Manny - If you look at the next to last photo from your link you'll
notice that the problem isn't the height of your stack-up, but rather
that the ends of the clip are hitting the inside of the opening for the
sensor and can't spread wide enough to go around the sensor.  Turn the
clip 90deg.

Hopefully you've already realized this.
