[s-cars] July 4 good time to replace clutch :)

Chad,

I already got all parts on order. Have few questions.
Your note about clutch slave cylinder doesn't seem to be very clear (may be it will when I get there :) )
What stud are you talking about?

I will be doing all myself - helpers will not be an issue :)

Also, bentley says to use special tool to lift front of an engine in order to point transmission downwards. Did you do that? Is it necessary? If so - I will have to start thinking about building something like that..

Thanks,
Ivan

Ivan,

Looks like you have everything you need and then some. Clutch kit should have the alignment tool. The Luk kit I used did. If not they are easy to come by. (I might have one in the garage somewhere).

You do not need to drain the trans to change the clutch but if you want to do it while your in there it's not a bad idea. Make very sure you have the correct pressure plate for the car. It should look just like the old one with a tapered edge. If you can locate a stud to go in to the trans to mount the slave it will make installation easier. With a new dry slave it might not be an issue but the slave installation is very awkward. This also does not have to be done with the trans (trans will have to be back in car to install it) but will be a lot easier with a lift.

Take your time pulling out the trans. It seems like it won't come out. It will. Just has to be very carefully maneuvered out by one person with the trans secured on a jack. If you have helpers every one of them will want to help with the removal but it's very difficult to feel what's happening with more than one person tugging on the trans, driveshafts, etc.

It's a big job. Especially the first time. Having a lift makes it a lot easier. (Did my 2nd one on a lift in about 6 hours).

Just wanted to confirm with knowledgeable public that I didn't miss anything in my shopping list.
Planning on doing clutch in my 93' S4 over long weekend, don't want to sit without needed part.
Anything you think I miss - please post here. Any tools that specific to this job (other then triplesquare socket)?
