That would be your basic CV type grease that was not cleaned up. There also
s a paper "gasket" that goes between the flange and the CV joint. Bentley
says to replace 'em. Never did on my 5KTQ. Have not one there yet on the
S6.

Sean,
I will be filling the V8 diff with new fluid, but I was asking about
the connecting points where the drive shaft bolts on and the two rear
axels bolt on. The diff now has a fair amount of grease in those
three locations.
