This is true... never leap to conclusions.  2 quick checks:
 
1) Have someone crank the car while your in the trunk measuring to see if  
there's voltage there.
2) Make sure the system is void of pressure... crack the line at the fuel  
filter.
 
If you have voltage, and you don't have pressure at the filter lines, your  
pump is shot.
