At a military base where I used to work, the on-base cops got a new
radar gun. This story was told to me by a tech at the base communications
shop, after the event.
The tech got a call from the city airport, which was just north of
the base - they wanted to know if the military base had some sort of
radar turned on, because incoming planes were experiencing weather
radar failure. The caller from the airport said that their indicators
made it appear that a radar signal was coming from the direction of
the military base. By the second or third call to the base, the airport
had grounded about a half dozen planes with radar failure. Finally,
the local FAA ran an airborn locator which again pointed at the military
base. It turned out that the cops had their new radar gun out on top
of their building and were clocking incoming planes!
After my friend the tech told me of this, I noticed that the cops
radar handgun had a sticker on the side that said "do not point
at planes" ... :-)
