John,
I just did my first school last year. I'm hooked now and plan at least
three this Summer.
Here's the link to the ACNA rules. Read this rather than the local chapter
sites; this is current. Lots of useful stuff:
http://www.audiclubna.org/calendar/rules.html
For your first time, it might be best to rent a helmet from the club, if
your local chapter has one. Helmets are not cheap, and you wouldn't want to
buy one and then find out you don't enjoy the track. If you do buy one, buy
a good SA2005 helmet. Get someone who knows what they are doing to help you
get the right fit.
For a car, take the stick over the auto any day.
Too late for you, but I would advise anyone thinking of doing a school to go
and spectate or help out at a school before signing up. It gives you an
idea of what the adgenda is and the general flow of events.
Don't be too freaked out. It's a great, supportive atmosphere. Well
controlled and organized. You can drive at your own pace. Have fun and
work on finding the line. Once you find a line that works well for you,
fast just happens.
Bleed your brakes, make sure your pads are thick, have your car teched, and
bring twice as much water as you think you can drink.

I'm thinking of attending the ACNA driving school in Vegas in April.
Although a long time lister, I've never been to a track event before.
Kind of sparse here in Utah. A few questions for you wise men of
listdom:
-A helmet is required. What kind of helmet?
-Is it worthwhile as a rookie?
-Should I plan on wasting a set of tires?
-What are the insurance implications of a worst case scenario? (from
a bent fender to upside down)
-Which car should I take, the old one ('93 S4) or the new one ('02
S6)? Probably depends on
the answer to the above question.
Thanks for any input, sorry to be such a newb.
John Farr
