I agree, BOb.  I have the same phenomenon.  I would guess it is the whole
cam position sensor deal, trying to figure out which engine cycle it's on to
calculate the proper timing.  The old 10 valves, and even the 3B, had
distributors so no need for that.   Just my speculation.

Unlike the older 10V motors, which started like throwing a light switch,
I've never experienced an instantaneous starting AAN.  Seem to always be
in the 4-6 revs before it kicks.  Some folks have said it's the Motronic
system checking to make sure all systems are go before launch.  Whether
there's any truth to that I don't know.
