I did precisely that exactly two years ago in May of 2004. The boots are 
now destroyed. The OEM ones have lasted for 7 years and the boots were 
still intact when I removed the arms. I only replaced the arms 'cuz I 
thought the bushings were worn out. Should've left them alone... :(
