Craig,
The car started because the switch was damaged and was
always going to slip back into the Start position as
soon as it was removed from the ignition lock. The
lock mechanism was keeping it turned back at the Off
position.
The solution to this problem is to simply disconnect
the wiring first before removing the switch. Though
there is little room in there, it can be done. Once
you electrically disconnect the switch, the car will
not start.
